The Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturdays are always a great time to visit the museum and check out the current exhibitions. On the first Saturday of each month (except September and in 2011, January too), the BMA waives the admission fee after 5 PM and until 11 PM, and puts on what amounts to a giant house party in a museum. There are movies, cocktails, live music, dancing, special programs, and more and the atmosphere is electric with energy. Probably because I design for the masses, I love to see art and get new inspiration in this setting.
This past weekend my beau and I attended Fist Saturday, and in addition to checking out the Norman Rockwell exhibit and the European paintings surrounding the dance floor, we were excited to visit “Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968.” Both of us are fans of the Pop Art movement and love that the Brooklyn Museum, which has a whole section for feminist art (which, by the way, includes Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party), is highlighting the women who took part in the movement and, in some ways, subverted it.
These are some of my favorite works/inspirations from the exhibit (taken with the ShakeItPhoto app for iPhone):
The “Seductive Subversion: Women Pop Artists, 1958–1968” exhibit runs through January 9, 2011 at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, located at 200 Eastern Parkway. For hours and directions, visit the Brooklyn Museum of Art’s website.
