I don’t think I’m alone in feeling a bit overwhelmed by the state of, well, EVERYTHING these days… And since we’re in such an abnormal time, it can be difficult to know what “business as usual” should look like.
Or if that even still exists anymore.
I’m not writing this because I have the answers. I’m writing this because I can’t dive right into talking about entrepreneurship, branding, and design without at least gesturing in the general direction of the elephant in the room.
Its wrinkly haunches will, at times, inevitably get in the way of the important work we’re all doing. But rather than derail us, I maintain hope that it will add fuel to our fires.
Our businesses may still be operating, but let’s reconsider “as usual,” shall we?
You are a talented, brilliant bunch. A lot of you are kicking serious butt. I’m sure a lot of you, like me, are nevertheless fatigued and overwhelmed (at least once in a while). If you’re unsure of where to start, or where you fit, try considering what you can do with your specific skill-set to contribute to something you feel passionate about in a creative way. Ask yourself, “What do I do really well?” Then, “Where can I bring that skill that will do the most good?”
I personally am using design to bring attention and legitimacy to projects and causes that are important to me. It’s not an end, but it’s a need I can fill and it is something I can offer on days I feel like I have nothing more to give. The fact that I enjoy it and it brings me joy is not just a bonus, but, on those particular days, a necessity.
Let’s all continue to bring our passion and talents to the world, and do it with a renewed vigor, unapologetically, with confidence and determination, and with our heads held high.
Explore, ask, offer, create.
Persist.
